Who Is Âmérrance? A Soul That Wanders

Share
A lone traveller stands at the end of an old limestone street at first light.

Somewhere tonight, someone is looking at a map on their phone. It might be Kyoto in the first week of autumn colour, a reef off the coast of Oman, or a final they promised themselves they would see in person one day. They have looked at it many times before. They will probably close the app and tell themselves someday.

This is the first post on the Âmérrance blog, so we want to begin by telling you who we are and why we are here. Âmérrance is a travel and lifestyle organisation built for the moment that person stops saying someday and goes. Everything we publish, from an event guide to a note on local law, is written to bring that moment a little closer and to make sure you are ready when it arrives.

What the name Âmérrance means

Our name joins two French words. Âme means the soul. Errance means wandering, the long, unhurried movement of someone who is heading somewhere without yet knowing everything they will find. Together they describe a soul that wanders. The accent marks the point where the two words meet, and we say it ah-may-RAHNSS.

We chose it because it describes something most seasoned travellers recognise and rarely put into words. A journey takes you across a map, and it also changes the person taking it. You come home from a place that asked something of you, and you carry it with you for years. You remember the street you walked at first light, the meal you shared with people you had met that afternoon, and the rule you learned the night before you landed. That slow change in a person is what Âmérrance means to us.

The three dots above our name

Three dots sit above the word Âmérrance. Together they form an ellipsis, the mark a sentence makes when it has more to say. Every someday is written this way. The thought is already there, and its ending is still open.

The first two dots stand for the preparation that comes before a journey. One represents understanding the place, including its history, its politics and its laws. The other represents understanding what the journey will ask of you. They share a colour because they belong together, and they are the part of the work we do alongside you.

The third dot has a colour of its own. It stands for the moment you go, and that step belongs to you. From there, the sentence carries on in a direction only you can write.

Who we are

Âmérrance is a small team of specialists, founded by Thomas Jreige. Each of us has travelled widely, often well past the places most itineraries reach. Between us we have crossed border towns, waited through long mornings in consular offices, eaten in kitchens no guidebook mentions, and watched regions change faster than the news could keep up.

Three working disciplines shape everything we publish.

  • Geopolitics allows us to read a region before we write about it, so our safety guidance rests on an understanding of who governs a place, what shaped it and what is shifting there now.
  • International law allows us to answer the questions that sit underneath a trip, including visas, dual nationality, local laws that visitors rarely hear about, and what happens when something goes wrong far from home.
  • Mindset and psychology help us understand why people put off the journeys that matter most to them, and they point to the small, practical steps that move a plan from an intention to a booked flight.

Each discipline sharpens the others. When we tell you a region is calm, we have read why. When we tell you a rule matters, we can explain where it comes from and what it means for you. When we suggest that now is the time to go, we understand how hard that decision can feel, and we help you make it with a clear head.

Where we work

Âmérrance is based in Perth, and our work reaches around the world. The team spends much of its time travelling, and we write about places we have been to and read closely. Our readers start their journeys from many different cities, so we write our guidance to be useful wherever you begin.

Home still shapes how we think. Perth is one of the most distant cities on earth, and living here has given us a deep respect for long journeys and for planning them properly. That habit of careful preparation runs through every guide we write, whether you are leaving from Perth, London, Singapore or anywhere else.

What you will find on the Âmérrance blog

Our public writing is free, and it will stay that way. The blog, our Instagram and Facebook pages, and the monthly Âmérrance letter carry the places, food, seasons and events worth crossing the world for. Over the coming year you will see a few recurring series.

  • Worth the Flight guides cover events around the world that deserve a trip of their own, with the dates, the tickets, how to get there, where to stay and what to know about local rules.
  • Twelve Months Out looks at what is in season right now and shows you how to plan the same month next year, since airlines usually release fares about eleven months ahead.
  • Read the Place explains who governs a country, what shaped it, what locals care about and what a visitor can do to travel there well.
  • The Unwritten Rules sets out the customs and local laws that visitors rarely hear about, with the reason behind each one.
  • If Something Goes Wrong gives calm, step-by-step guidance for difficult moments abroad, such as a lost passport or a medical emergency.
  • The Travelling Mind draws on real psychology to explain why we put off the journeys that matter and what helps us move forward.
  • The Table, Beneath and Beyond, and First Light cover food, the ocean and the outdoors, and the quiet early hours that stay with you after a trip.

Free readers receive our public newsletter. A paid Âmérrance subscription is for readers who are ready to plan a particular trip. It brings our main newsletter and subscriber offers, along with full itineraries, detailed country dossiers, event packs, our complete points and loyalty guide, and direct access to the team for questions about your own journey. The free writing helps you choose where to go, and the paid subscription helps you plan, book and prepare for it.

The standard we hold ourselves to

We have one simple standard. Everything we publish should be something we would hand to a person we care about before they boarded a plane.

In practice, that shapes how we write. We check dates, rules and travel advice before we state them, and we note when our safety guidance was last checked. We keep our tone measured, because good judgement rarely needs to raise its voice. Where a topic touches on law or personal safety, we give clear general information and encourage you to seek advice for your own circumstances.
